MYP Algebra 2 - Ch10 - Writing 3

p.614 #76a

A tour boat travels between two islands that are 12 miles apart. For a trip between the islands, there is enough fuel for a 20-mile tour.

The region in which the boat can travel is bounded by an ellipse. Explain why this is so.

this is so because from any point on the surronding elipse, to either of the islands, would not exceed the 20 miles worth of fuel. you could even go from one island to any point on the elipse and back to the other island without running out of fuel. so its bounded because you could travel from the first island to the second with just enough fuel.

How far the boat can travel from Island 1 or 2, the foci, is an elipse because there is more fuel than necessary to travel from Island 1 to 2. There is a 20-mile limit for the tour, and the distance between Island 1 and 2 is 12 miles. If you were to draw two lines, from Island 1 and 2 to any one point on the elipse, those two lines added together would equal 20 miles.
